It means Wagepay is operating within the payday-lending regulatory framework applicable to the provinces in which it offers these loans.

Where Is Wagepay Available?

As of September 2026, Wagepay says its Canadian loans are available in:

Ontario

Alberta

British Columbia.

You need to live and work in one of Wagepay’s supported provinces to meet its stated minimum eligibility requirements.

Wagepay says it plans to expand into additional provinces, but don’t assume the service is available where you live without checking its current eligibility information.

How Much Can You Borrow From Wagepay?

Wagepay offers loans starting from $100, with a maximum advertised limit of $1,500.

That doesn’t mean a new applicant can automatically borrow $1,500.

Wagepay says new customers may receive a loan limit of up to 25% of their pay. Returning customers with a good repayment history may be offered more, up to the $1,500 maximum.

Your actual loan amount is assessed each time you apply, and Wagepay says loan limits aren’t permanent.

You can also only have one Wagepay loan open at a time.

How Much Does Wagepay Cost?

Wagepay currently advertises an establishment fee of up to $14 for every $100 borrowed.

That means the borrowing cost can look like this:

Amount borrowed

Fee at $14 per $100

Total repayment

$100

$14

$114

$300

$42

$342

$500

$70

$570

$1,000

$140

$1,140

$1,500

$210

$1,710

These examples simply apply a $14-per-$100 fee for illustration. Its example of a $100 loan over 62 days has an APR of 82.42%.

These examples don’t mean every Wagepay loan will have the same repayment period or APR. Check the actual cost and repayment schedule shown in your agreement before accepting a loan.

Is $14 per $100 Expensive?

Yes. Payday loans remain an expensive form of borrowing even though the dollar fee on a small loan can initially look manageable.

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) describes payday loans as an expensive way to borrow money.

FCAC gives an example of borrowing $300 for 14 days at $14 per $100. The payday loan costs $42. In FCAC’s comparison, other short-term borrowing methods such as a line of credit, overdraft protection or a credit-card cash advance cost considerably less under the assumptions used.

This is why you should compare alternatives before choosing a payday loan, even if you only need a relatively small amount.

Does Wagepay Charge Late or NSF Fees?

Wagepay says it doesn’t charge:

late fees

NSF fees

pre-authorized debit fees

card processing fees.

However, that doesn’t necessarily mean a failed payment costs you nothing. Your own bank or financial institution may charge fees if there isn’t enough money in your account to cover a payment.

You should also check your loan agreement for the consequences of missing or failing to make a scheduled repayment.

Who Can Apply for Wagepay?

Wagepay currently lists several minimum requirements.

To be considered, you must:

be at least 18 years old

live and work in Ontario, Alberta or British Columbia

be employed

receive regular and consistent employment income of at least $400 per week

have at least 60 days of bank statement history available for assessment

have enough income remaining each pay cycle to repay the loan

meet Wagepay’s banking-history requirements.

Wagepay says $400 per week is roughly equivalent to $800 every two weeks or around $1,600 per month.

If you receive government benefits, Wagepay says you may still apply provided you’re also receiving regular employment income and meet its other requirements.

Meeting the minimum requirements doesn’t guarantee approval. Every application is still subject to Wagepay’s assessment.

Does Wagepay Do a Credit Check?

Wagepay says it doesn’t perform a credit check with Equifax or TransUnion during its sign-up or payday-loan application process.

Instead, it assesses your bank transaction history.

Wagepay says its Bank Score can consider:

income consistency

how you manage your bank account

your Wagepay repayment history if you’re an existing customer.

As a result, Wagepay says being declined doesn’t affect your Equifax or TransUnion credit score.

However, no credit check doesn’t mean no assessment. Your banking history and affordability still play an important role in whether Wagepay offers you a loan.

If you want to understand how different lender inquiries can affect your credit file, see our Soft vs Hard Credit Checks in Canada guide.

Why Might Wagepay Decline an Application?

Wagepay lists several reasons an application may be declined, including:

not having enough bank-account history

insufficient or inconsistent income

affordability concerns

previous pre-authorized debit or repayment issues

a low Wagepay Bank Score.

Wagepay says applicants who are declined can generally reapply after seven days, when their loan limit can be reassessed.

Don’t treat the ability to reapply as a reason to keep applying if repayments would be difficult to afford. A declined application may also be a useful reason to reconsider whether taking on additional short-term debt is appropriate for your budget.

How Does Wagepay Work?

The Wagepay application process is completed online through its website or mobile app.

1. Create a Wagepay Account

New customers first create an account and provide the information Wagepay requests.

2. Connect Your Bank Account

You’ll need to connect a bank account so Wagepay can assess your income and transaction history.

Wagepay says it uses digital bank feeds provided by Flinks and Plaid to access a read-only copy of your transaction history. It says this access can’t be used to move money out of your account or make changes to it.

3. Complete the Loan Application

Wagepay assesses your application and banking information to determine whether you qualify and how much it may offer you.

4. Review Your Offer

If you’re offered a loan, check the amount, fee, payment dates, total repayment and other terms before accepting it.

5. Receive the Money

Wagepay uses Interac e-Transfer to send approved funds.

Wagepay advertises fast Interac deposits, but funding times can still depend on the application, assessment and payment process. Don’t make financial commitments based on an assumption that money will arrive at a particular time.

How Long Does a Wagepay Application Take?

Wagepay says its bank-feed connection process usually takes around 3 to 4 minutes, although it can sometimes take longer.

The overall application time can vary because Wagepay also needs to assess your information and banking history.

These are process estimates rather than a guarantee of approval or funding within a specific time.

How Do Wagepay Repayments Work?

Repayment depends partly on the province and the terms of your particular loan.

Ontario and British Columbia payday loans can involve relatively short repayment periods. Alberta’s rules differ, and Wagepay says its Alberta loans run from 42 to 62 days with between 2 and 7 payments, depending on income frequency.

Always check the payment schedule before accepting the loan. A $500 loan may look manageable when considered as $500 of cash today, but the important question is whether your budget can comfortably absorb the full repayment when it falls due.

Can You Repay Wagepay Early?

Wagepay allows customers to repay their loan early.

It also says there’s no fixed waiting period after a loan has been repaid before you can submit another application, although another assessment is required.

Be careful with repeatedly borrowing again soon after repayment. Using one payday loan to bridge the gap created by repaying another can make it difficult to break the borrowing cycle.

Wagepay Pros and Cons

Potential advantages

Potential drawbacks

No Equifax or TransUnion credit check

Payday loans are a high-cost form of borrowing

Online application

Only available in three provinces

Loans from $100

Maximum $1,500

No late, NSF or card-processing fees charged by Wagepay

Your bank may still charge its own fees

Interac e-Transfer funding

Requires access to bank transaction history

Licensed in each province where currently offered

Minimum employment-income requirement

Is Wagepay Good for Bad Credit?

Wagepay may be of interest to someone whose credit score makes traditional borrowing difficult because Wagepay says it doesn’t check Equifax or TransUnion during its application process.

But that shouldn’t be confused with guaranteed approval.

Wagepay assesses your banking activity, employment income and affordability through its own process. Someone with poor credit could therefore still be declined if they don’t meet Wagepay’s requirements.

And because payday loans can be considerably more expensive than other forms of credit, having bad credit doesn’t automatically make Wagepay the best available option.

If you’re comparing different borrowing options with a lower credit score, our Bad Credit Loans Canada guide explains the wider options and risks to consider.

What Should You Consider Before Using Wagepay?

The main attraction of Wagepay is fairly obvious: the application is online, there’s no Equifax or TransUnion credit check, and eligible customers can access a relatively small amount of money before payday.

The main drawback is equally important: this is expensive short-term borrowing.

Before accepting a Wagepay loan, ask yourself:

Do I actually need to borrow this money?

Can I cover the repayment without struggling to pay rent, groceries, utilities or other bills?

Have I compared cheaper alternatives?

Do I understand exactly how much I’ll repay?

What happens to my budget after the repayment is taken?

Am I borrowing to cover an ongoing monthly shortfall rather than a one-off expense?

The last question is particularly important. If you regularly run out of money before payday, repeatedly using short-term loans can treat the immediate cash shortage without fixing the underlying budget problem.

Alternatives to Wagepay

Before taking a payday loan, consider whether a lower-cost option is available.

The FCAC suggests alternatives that may include:

a loan or line of credit from your financial institution

overdraft protection

a credit-card cash advance

asking creditors for more time to pay

asking your employer about a pay advance

borrowing from family or friends where appropriate.

Not every alternative will be available or suitable, but comparing the cost before borrowing is worthwhile. FCAC’s examples show that payday loans can cost substantially more than several other short-term credit options.

How to Apply for Wagepay

If you’ve compared the costs and alternatives and decide Wagepay is appropriate for your situation, the application can be completed online.

Before starting, make sure you:

live and work in Ontario, Alberta or British Columbia

receive at least $400 per week in regular employment income

have at least 60 days of banking history

are comfortable connecting your bank account for assessment

can afford the repayment shown in your loan offer.

Wagepay will assess your application and determine whether you’re eligible and what amount may be available. It lists payday-loan licence numbers for all three provinces on its Canadian website.

How much can I borrow from Wagepay?

Wagepay currently offers loans from $100 up to a maximum of $1,500. New customers may be offered up to 25% of their pay, while returning customers may be eligible for more. Your actual limit is subject to assessment.

Does Wagepay check your credit?

Wagepay says it doesn’t perform Equifax or TransUnion credit checks as part of its sign-up or payday-loan process. Instead, it assesses your bank transaction history and uses its own Bank Score.

How much income do I need for Wagepay?

Wagepay currently requires regular employment income of at least $400 per week, which it describes as approximately $800 bi-weekly or $1,600 per month. Other eligibility and affordability requirements also apply.

How much does Wagepay charge?

Wagepay currently advertises an establishment fee of up to $14 per $100 borrowed. The repayment period and APR can differ by province, so check the actual cost shown in your loan agreement before accepting an offer.

Which provinces does Wagepay operate in?

Wagepay currently offers loans in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. Its website says support for additional provinces is planned.

The Bottom Line: Is Wagepay Worth It?

Wagepay offers a convenient online payday-loan service for eligible workers in Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia. Its main distinguishing feature is that it doesn’t use an Equifax or TransUnion credit check, instead assessing applicants using banking history and its own Bank Score.

There are some positives: Wagepay is licensed in the provinces where it currently operates, publishes its borrowing costs, offers loans from $100 and says it doesn’t charge late or NSF fees itself.

But the biggest drawback shouldn’t be overlooked. Wagepay is still a high-cost form of short-term borrowing. A fee of $14 per $100 means borrowing $500 can cost $70, and borrowing $1,000 can cost $140 at that fee level.

For someone facing a genuine short-term cash shortage who understands the cost and can comfortably make the repayment, Wagepay may be one option to compare.
